The Eixample stretches across the centre of Barcelona and is a very popular district with both locals and visitors alike. Its grid layout, made up of wide streets and octagonal-shaped blocks, offers one of the most iconic images of Barcelona: so much so that we decided to include it in our logo.
The south of the district is bordered by Barcelona´s most famous square, Plaza Catalunya and by the neighbouring Born and Gothic districts to the east and west respectively. To the north you will find the non-touristy barrio of Gracia, just one of Barcelona?s many trendy and charming districts.
One of the safest in Barcelona, the Eixample has much to offer with its wide variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and nightclubs. It is split into "Left" and "Right" by the famous avenue "Passeig de Gracia" where you will find 2 of Gaudí´s most famous works: the Casa Batlló and "La Pedrera" with its famous chimneys.
Much of the district has the advantage of being relatively quiet at night, coming alive during the day. Many locals live here, reflected in its wealth of supermarkets, cinemas, newsagents and chemists. The area is well-served by public transport, with lots of buses running to and from the centre and the beach, as well as lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 running throughout this area, with many convenient metro stops.
With boulevards full of up-market shops, restaurants and bars, Eixample Derecho is also home to Barcelona´s most popular tourist attraction; the world renowned Gaudí cathedral "La Sagrada Familia", ironically located in a residential area with lots of Chinese restaurants and supermarkets close by. You can also find the modern Glories Shopping Centre in Eixample Derecho and just ten minutes walk away from the Sagrada Familia, is the neomudéjar and bizantine-style bullring, the Plaza de Toros Monumental. Similar in its lavishness is the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, a building designed by the famous Catalan architect Domènech i Montaner, also located in this district.
